A Playful Home with Josefine Hedemann

An inviting blend of color, textiles, and charming decor is what immediately greets you as you step through the door of interior designer Josefine Hedeman. With a profession in design and styling, Josefine’s playful intuition is beautifully reflected in her home, and we met up with Josefine for a chat about her approach to interior design, both professionally and in her own home, and how she views MODU as an interesting element in home decor.

What first sparked your interest in interior design, and what do you enjoy most about the process of decorating and styling?

It’s a bit of a tricky question, but what I really enjoy, and what I think I do well, is working with color and bringing together different elements in harmonious way. I love combining existing furniture with new materials and textiles, like curtains, rugs, wall hangings, and art. It’s about weaving all these different elements together.

It’s very much how I approach private and professional interior projects too. I always begin by looking at what’s already there, what sets the tone for the space. Maybe it’s a pair of vintage chairs or a standout color. I love incorporating existing elements, and source pre-loved and second-hand times when possible, giving the space a new expression, while building on the existing foundation.

What's important to you when decorating and creating a home for you and your family? And how does your professional background influence the way you approach decorating your own home?

It’s quite similar to how I approach my work. We moved into our apartment and renovated it before having kids, and after seven years, we felt it was time for a change. We picked new wall colors and collaborated with Kurage on curtains, shaping a new expression while still using many of the pieces we already had, and adding a few smaller things to bring it together.

Most of what’s in our home are pieces I’ve lived with for years—things that have followed me from place to place, things I’ve inherited from my mother or picked up at flea markets. Even when I take on a renovation, I like the idea that not everything has to be new.

What do you associate with a 'playful' home?

I think it’s about daring to mix different colors and materials, blending old and new, and playing with all these elements, without everything necessarily having to "match". It’s hard to explain, because for me, it’s such a visual and intuitive process. It’s about sensing when things come together in the right way. It’s also very tactile. I move things around all the time. Maybe I’ll try something out for a few days while I live with it and feel it out. Does it work practically? Visually? And if it doesn’t, then I try something else.

From a stylist’s perspective, what makes MODU interesting as an element in home decor?

I really like its graphic quality—the clean, structured form, which makes it interesting to integrate into a more organic and lively setting. I also love that the elements come in different colors, allowing them to blend into various spaces, so you can choose something that suits your home and taste.

And then, of course, I love the functional aspect. Just this morning, we built a play kitchen that’s now standing in our actual kitchen, but it serves a different purpose in the kids’ room. The fact that you can move MODU around the home and adapt it to different needs, that’s just such a great concept.
